Aging, Disability & Transit Services of Rockingham County operates RCATS and the skat bus, which both combine to create a seamless Rockingham County public access transit system. Public transportation is an essential part of connecting communities by providing service to those residents who need access to services such as health care, work, school, and other life-sustaining resources. The system provides safe and reliable transportation services to contracted agencies and the general public. Transportation services receive funding assistance and oversight support from the North Carolina Department of Transportation and the Federal Transit Administration.

RCATS General Information-
The RCATS fleet provides services under contract for the general public and the majority of the Health and Human Services in Rockingham County. Typical destinations include medical facilities, rehabilitation and treatment centers, educational facilities other than K-12 schools, employment, and grocery shopping. Fares may apply depending upon eligibility and destination. Time and service restrictions may exist due to limited levels of funding.

Non-emergency Medical Transportation
ADTS transportation administration staff also schedules and coordinates all non-emergency medical transportation trips for Medicaid recipients in and out of Rockingham County. The agency contracts with other service providers, Pelham Transportation, A Safe Hands Transportation, CJ Medical Transportation, Moving on Faith Transportation, Devine Purpose Transportation, and Tarheel Blue Transport to provide trips out of Rockingham County. All paperwork and verifications are handled in our office.

The Transportation Advisory Board holds meetings to assist ADTS in serving the transportation needs of the community. The meetings are held quarterly on the 2nd Tuesday of February, May, August, and November at 8:30 am at 105 Lawsonville Road Reidsville, NC 27320.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Who can ride?
Anyone who is a resident of Rockingham County is eligible to ride the Aging, Disability & Transit Services vehicles. An adult must accompany anyone under the age of 18 to and from appointments unless special provisions have been made prior to the transportation being provided. All passengers are allowed one attendant to ride along.
Who is eligible for free transportation and who pays the fare?
An eligibility screening is done upon initial contact with the transportation system and the passenger and/or family will know whether a fare applies or not. Some forms of Medicaid provide for transportation to medical appointments only and the passenger is not required to pay a fare. Fares range from $2.00 to $3.00 each way depending upon location and destination. Tickets may be purchased in advance of transportation for passengers having repeat trips such as employment or education. Fares will apply to any non-covered medical appointments or reservations such as shopping, visits to Social Services, educational or employment trips.
How do I set up transportation?
There is no need to come to the office to make transportation arrangements. For your convenience, we are able to take your reservation over the phone. Call 336-347-2287 to schedule a ride or obtain more information. Due to seating capacity, van availability, and route arrangements, please make note of the following:
- Three (3) working day notice is required in advance of appointments for all in-county reservation requests
- A five (5) working day notice is required in advance of appointments for all out-of-county reservation requests
What is it like riding in the van?
At the time of the reservation, the passenger will be given a pick-up time for the driver to arrive at the home. Usually 30 minutes prior to appointment if the destination is in the same city, Usually 1 hour prior to the appointment if the destination is in a different city or the passenger is non-ambulatory. The pick-up time is a “window” – the driver may arrive 15 minutes before or after the given time. Please be prepared. Drivers’ are allowed to wait five (5) minutes after they arrive to the pick-up point for you to board the van. The passenger should encounter a courteous, responsible driver who has been trained by the North Carolina Department of Transportation standards and who submits to random drug and alcohol testing. The drivers are not allowed to help passengers on or off the vehicle, enter the passenger’s home, assist with buckling seatbelts, or handling personal belongings. If the passenger needs assistance that drivers cannot provide, one attendant is allowed to ride at no additional cost. After the appointment, the passenger and/or a representative from the destination will call the office to arrange for the van to come back. Usually, a passenger will only have to wait 15 minutes or so for the van to return.
